Sequenced Red
is an audiovisual performance project by Tormoz and Pouya Ehsaei, created in response to a period of social and political crisis in Iran.
The work explores themes of perseverance, resistance, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and freedom, while reflecting on the violence endured, the hopes sustained, and the sacrifices made throughout that process.
Developed between London and Iran, *Sequenced Red* also emerged from the practical limitations of distance and restricted mobility. Over two years, the artists designed and refined a system that allows the performance to exist beyond physical presence: a custom real-time visual environment created by Tormoz that can be sequenced and performed live through Pouya’s hardware-based musical setup.
The source material for the performance was developed during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising in Iran. Parts of the visual footage were captured and produced by Tormoz during that period. While rooted in a specific moment, the improvisational nature of the system allows each performance to adapt to its context and remain open to reinterpretation across different spaces and audiences.
Using modular synthesis, sequencing, sampling, and improvisation, Pouya performs both sound and image simultaneously. The visual system responds as an instrument rather than a playback medium, allowing visuals to be improvised and shaped in real time alongside the music.
